The right protective equipment is the foundation of confident batting. Here is how to make sure your gear works as hard as you do.
All helmets sold in the UK must meet BS 7928:2013 certification. Beyond compliance, focus on fit: the helmet should sit level on your head without rocking, with the peak not obstructing your view. Adjustable sizing systems allow fine-tuning. If you fall between sizes, always choose the smaller option for a snugger fit.
Prioritise coverage and weight. Traditional cane-and-bolster pads offer excellent protection and a classic feel, while modern foam pads are significantly lighter. Make sure the knee roll sits correctly on your kneecap and that the pad extends to cover your shin fully when in your batting stance.
Your gloves should feel snug but not restrictive. The fingers of the glove should extend to match your own fingertips without bunching. Look for reinforced zones on the thumb and leading edge side, as these areas take the most impact. Ventilation panels are valuable for comfort during long innings.
At any level above casual cricket, a chest guard is strongly recommended, particularly for batsmen facing pace bowling. Arm guards protect the forearm of your top hand — a common impact zone when playing defensive shots. Both are lightweight and barely noticeable once fitted.
Beyond the Basics
Your primary pads, gloves, and helmet are the essentials, but well-prepared cricketers go further. Inner gloves wick moisture and reduce friction. Thigh guards shield against balls that bounce unexpectedly. Box protectors are, quite simply, non-negotiable.
